The full form of NCERT in Education is NATIONAL COUNCIL OF EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH AND TRAINING.

What is the NCERT?

NCERT is an autonomous organization by the Government of India formed in 1961. This organization was set up to help the Central and state government on policies and programmes for the improvement of school education while keeping the diverse culture of India in mind.

What is the meaning of the NCERT syllabus? Is the CBSE syllabus the same as NCERT?

NCERT syllabus is a syllabus designed under the national curriculum framework in such a way that it is considerate to a diverse set of students and courses are connected to each other. 

CBSE is an educational board which prescribes NCERT (a publishing body) as the primary source of the syllabus for CBSE board examinations. 

They both are different organizations dealing with different fields in the domain of education.

What are the objectives of NCERT? 

Following are the seven major objectives of NCERT according to their official website:

  • Undertake, promote and coordinate research in areas related to school education
  • Organise pre-service and in-service training of teachers
  • Prepare and publish model textbooks, supplementary material, newsletters, journals and develop educational kits, etc.
  • Develop and disseminate innovative educational techniques and practices
  • Collaborate and network with state educational departments, universities, ngo, etc.
  •  Act as a clearing house for ideas and information in matters related to school education
  •  Act as a nodal agency for achieving the goals of universalisation of elementary education

How useful are NCERT books for UPSC? How to read NCERT books for IAS Exams?

NCERT has a prime importance when it comes to civil service exams and for the foundation for many subjects in these exams. 

It is advisable to not ignore NCERT at all and focus only on the necessary books. 

For UPSC following method is recommended to study NCERT:

  1. If you want to start from basics then read the history NCERT from class 6 to 8th. Once clear you can read the history NCERT of classes 9th to 12th. Apply the same method for Geography.
  2. For economics class 11th and 12th NCERT is sufficient.
  3. NCERT books aren't a good source for politics and hence you can refer to other books.
