The full form of SMART in computer language is Self-Monitoring Analysis And Reporting Technology

What is smart in computer technology?

It is a controlling system that protects hard drives by giving it a warning of drive failures in advance.

Who invented SMART?

In 1992 IBM introduced the SMART in computer technology and was developed with ATA-3 specification. Earlier its name was Predictive Failure Analysis (PFA) and was initially developed for IBM only.

What is the purpose of SMART?

Over time the SMART monitors and analyzes mechanical features. If the hard drive is out of its tolerance then it predicts the upcoming failures and then checks the condition of the hard drive, thereby indicating the problem.

Then the hard drive sends analytical data to the BIOS and determines to send a warning message of future failing of the hard drive to the user.

The information BASIC provides

  • Threshold exceeded/ drive fail- It indicates that in the near future the hard drive will not be able to perform it specification. The damage might be catastrophic or subtle.
  • The threshold is not exceeded/ drive ok- It indicates that the damage is not vital and still has time to recover.

SMART attributes

These are the following attributes that can be useful during a digital forensic query

  • Power-On Hours - It gives an indication of the time the drive was used and powered on.
  • Power Cycle Count - It gives data on the number of power on and off cycles.

What are the Benefits of SMART tools?

  • Analyzes the health of the hard disk
  • Indicates disk failure
  • Gives backup before failure of the hard disk
  • Gives details data
  • Alerts through notification
